The Lillian Bolack Papers includes a photocopy of the essay "Pushing Back the Frontiers: A Pioneer Family in Rye Township, Grand Forks, North Dakota." The paper is 28 pages long and relates stories of Alfred Bolack's life as a child, husband, and father, along with his five brothers and six sisters, dating back to 1858. Alfred Bolack moved from Ohio to North Dakota about 1873, where he started a farm near what is now Larimore and eventually moved closer to Grand Forks.

Lillian Elizabeth Bolack was born on November 15, 1906 to Alfred and Caroline (Ritter) Bolack. Lillian had two sisters and one brother. She attended the Grand Forks County rural school, Rye #2, which was two miles from her house. Lillian graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks. Lillian and her family attended St. Michael's Church regularly in Grand Forks. She lived on the farm with her brother Alfred, eventually moving to Grand Forks.
